METALCO ANTARES

WHAT

The Antares is a photovoltaic charging station created and designed for Metalco. It was intended as an ideal, completely sustainable unit, where electric vehicles could park and be recharged. The system was designed to manage company fleets and municipal parking areas. The technological ‘tree’ designed by Pininfarina Extra is fuelled entirely by the photovoltaic cells lining the roof, and was conceived to generate in one year all the energy necessary to cover the consumption of two cars with an average daily range of 75 km.

METALCO ANTARES

HOW

This innovative charging station was developed for Metalco, a leader in the urban furniture market. It was the first modular unit (6700 x 4940 mm, minimum height 2380 mm), built by assembling steel parts and cast aluminium connecting elements. The 33 m2 roof is made of 20 photovoltaic panels, each 230 Wp, and can generate a total rated power of 4.6 kW.

The geometry of the ‘tree’ was designed to simplify the transport and assembly of the solar panels, with a consequent overall saving in energy. The charging station is supplied complete with a technological control unit that includes a two-way meter, a measuring unit to record the energy generated and an inverter with electrical inputs.

WHY

The Antares had its preview at MoTechEco in Rome, the Sustainable Mobility Fair that was held in the premises in the Department of the Environment in Rome. The project is further testimony of Pininfarina’s total commitment to sustainable mobility; the company does not only develop and manufacture electric cars and undertake research programmes that study the reduction of consumption and emissions, the use of alternative materials that are lighter and recyclable, and active and passive safety, but also designs the infrastructure that towns will need if they are to sustain the spread of electric mobility.
